Ranks in STARFLEET
Rank is one of the ways STARFLEET International (SFI) recognizes a member’s participation, contribution, service, and responsibility while adding to the Star Trek experience of the organization. Ranks are fictional and are intended to be fun. They do not make one member more important than another or automatically give someone authority over others. In STARFLEET, rank and authority are separate concepts: authority comes from the position or responsibility a member holds, while rank is a form of recognition.
STARFLEET uses a common grade system across its different rank structures. Most Chapter members use the familiar Naval ranks, ranging from Crewman Recruit through Master Chief Petty Officer for enlisted members, and Ensign through the various officer and flag ranks. Members participating in services such as the STARFLEET Marine Corps may instead use corresponding Ground Forces ranks while remaining at the same equivalent grade.
Rank and authority are separate concepts.

How Promotions Work at the Chapter Level
Most promotions occur at the Chapter level, with the CO authorized to promote members through O-5 (Commander/Lieutenant Colonel). O-6 (Captain/Colonel) is awarded by the Regional Coordinator, Executive Committee, or upon becoming a Chapter CO. O-7 and above (Flag Rank) are awarded by the Executive Committee.
For the USS Intrepid chapter, promotion is intended to recognize a member’s ongoing contribution and growth within the Chapter and STARFLEET. Participation, service, leadership, education, involvement, and demonstrated responsibility may all contribute toward advancement. Promotion is recognition rather than entitlement, and members may contribute to the Chapter in many different ways.
Time in Grade (TiG) is the minimum time required at each rank and does not guarantee promotion. Some involvement in the chapter and or STARFLEET is expected for a promotion to take place. TiG resets after each promotion and does not carry forward. With agreement of both the CO and XO, TiG may be waived for extraordinary service or contributions for promotions through E-9, W-5 and up to O-5.
